Annual Science Fair Results: Students Excel in Regional Competition
We are thrilled to announce that our talented students have once again demonstrated their scientific excellence at the Regional Science Fair, bringing home multiple prestigious awards and recognition for BokoneBophirima Academy.
The annual Regional Science Fair, held at the Mahikeng Convention Center from March 10-12, 2024, brought together over 200 students from 45 schools across the North West Province. Our 15 participants represented the very best of our STEM education program, showcasing innovative projects that addressed real-world challenges.
Outstanding Achievements
🥇 First Place Winners
-
Chemistry Category: Thabo Molefe (Grade 11) - "Sustainable Water Purification Using Local Materials"
-
Environmental Science: Nomsa Khumalo (Grade 10) - "Solar-Powered Irrigation System for Small Farms"
🥈 Second Place Winners
-
Physics Category: Michael Chen & Sarah Ndaba (Grade 12) - "Renewable Energy Storage Solutions"
-
Biology Category: Lerato Mthembu (Grade 11) - "Indigenous Plant Medicines: Scientific Analysis"
Beyond the top prizes, eight of our students received honorable mentions for their innovative approaches and excellent presentation skills. The judges were particularly impressed by the practical applications of our students' research and their deep understanding of scientific principles.
Spotlight: Thabo's Water Purification Project
Thabo Molefe's winning project addressed a critical issue in rural communities: access to clean drinking water. His innovative filtration system uses locally available materials including sand, charcoal, and ceramic filters to remove contaminants and bacteria from water sources.
"I wanted to create something that could actually help people in my community," Thabo explained. "This system is affordable and can be maintained using materials we can find locally."
Preparation and Mentorship
The success of our students is a testament to the dedication of our STEM faculty and the comprehensive science education program at BokoneBophirima Academy. Students began preparing for the competition in September 2023, working closely with their mentors to develop, test, and refine their projects.
"Our students don't just learn science—they live it. They ask questions, conduct experiments, and seek solutions to real problems. This science fair victory is just one example of what happens when curiosity meets excellent education."
Looking Ahead
Several of our winning projects will now advance to the National Science Fair competition in Johannesburg this June. We are confident that our students will continue to represent BokoneBophirima Academy with distinction on the national stage.
This achievement reinforces our commitment to STEM education and our belief that every student has the potential to become a scientist, innovator, and problem-solver. We congratulate all our participants and look forward to supporting the next generation of young scientists.
